Leaders who strive to leave this world better than they found it embody the spirit of legacy. During their tenure and beyond, they make a difference in the lives of others and hold themselves and others to high standards.
Kirkbi executive Michael Halbye personified the core principles of leadership. He brought humility and humanity to his 35-year tenure at McKinsey and philosophized, “You should always leave it stronger when you move on.” Eventually rising to the role of senior partner, he led McKinsey’s Copenhagen office, where he served as a mentor to many and earned the moniker “Mr. McKinsey.”
Progressive Insurance CEO Glenn Renwick, who fostered an open communication culture, led the company through tough times, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. After the disaster, he determined that Progressive would pay all claims and destroy damaged vehicles, which earned consumer trust and led to exponential growth. Marina Whitman, a former GM and White House adviser, was an early achiever at the urging of her famous father, who insisted on excellence. As a female executive, economist, and professor, she left a legacy of firsts and created opportunities for women who came after her. Toward the end of her career, Whitman wrote, “My father’s shadow has lifted at last; if we meet again, it will be in sunlight.”
