Clayton O’Toole

Advises consumer, retail, and media organizations on strategy, growth, and transformation

Clayton holds leadership positions in McKinsey’s Retail and Media practices in North America. He is passionate about the intersection of strategy and digital, where changing consumer behavior drives exciting new business models and challenges incumbents. He works closely with consumer-facing organizations to address these changes head-on.

Clayton brings a holistic business perspective to client service. He is experienced in advising on corporate and business unit strategy, digital strategy, transformation, and greenfield new business builds. His clients include soft and hardline retailers, media and entertainment organizations, and principal investors.

Examples of Clayton’s recent client work include the following:

  • partnering with the CEO of a major global specialty retailer to develop a new corporate growth strategy and launch a holistic company-wide transformation
  • designing and executing the strategic turnaround of a media company; the partnership involved the launch of multiple new digital growth businesses and a radical transformation of incumbent product experience and cost base
  • standing up and scaling a retail client’s social commerce business into one of the largest in North America
  • developing and implementing a new holistic growth strategy across customer and channel for a large, global specialty apparel retailer

In 2019, Clayton relocated to our Minneapolis office. He was previously based in Sydney, Australia, where he served consumer clients across Asia–Pacific. Prior to joining McKinsey, Clayton worked with a boutique consulting firm serving North American retail clients.

Outside of work, Clayton enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He is a fan of Kansas City barbecue and sports teams and enjoys traveling to wine regions around the globe.
