The primary focus of Joseph’s work is large-scale transformations, which begin with strategy development, and end with delivery of financial, operational, and capability improvements, typically under a client-McKinsey partnership model. 

Joseph works with client CEOs and senior executives to identify areas for significant revenue growth and margin improvement and to help their companies attain those goals through operational and strategic programs. He brings a heavy focus on building the capabilities of senior leaders so that they can sustain and extend results.

Joseph is committed to innovation in regard to the way McKinsey works with clients. He cofounded McKinsey Implementation and led McKinsey’s global research on success factors in a company's implementation performance—testing what specific behaviors and capabilities are most closely correlated with financial outperformance.

In his work with clients, Joseph brings expertise from a variety of industries including retail, consumer, energy, financial services, telecommunications, industrials and mining.

Examples of Joseph's recent client work include:

  • undertaking an 18-month operational-improvement effort with a retail client; conducting a comprehensive diagnostic to prioritize opportunities and delivering AU $200 million in cost reductions via an implementation and improvement coaching partnership
  • developing a productivity strategy with a banking client, identifying a AU $400 million profit-improvement opportunity and developing the roadmap and governance for the implementation of a series of projects
  • leading a multi-year transformation for a mining client, conducting diagnostic work on opportunities to improve volume and reduce costs and working with the client on a multisite implementation effort that delivered more than AU $500 million in bottom-line savings

Joseph holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was a Fulbright Scholar, and a BA and LLB from The University of Sydney. He is a Director of Care Australia, a leading not-for-profit organization aiming to alleviate poverty in the developing world, with a special focus on the advancement of women and girls.
